Open the Book

Open the Book

Have you ever thought that children in schools might be missing out on what the Bible has to show them? They could go through their entire school life without ever learning about Adam and Eve, Noah, David, Jonah ... or even the life of Jesus and the stories of the New Testament.

Well, here in the Woodfield Team of Churches, we have an active OPEN THE BOOKgroup. In the last year, they have been visiting seven schools: Measham CE Academy, Donisthorpe County Primary, Packington CE school, Newton Burgoland County Primary, Oakthorpe County Primary, Sir John Moore School in Appleby and  Snarestone CE school.

Here is a sneak preview of the last rehearsal of the story of Mary, Martha and Lazarus:

And here is Lazarus at one of the school peformances.

And Jesus visiting his friends Mary and Martha

And what about the size of these grapes as the people of Israel came in to the Promised Land?

And here's the  story of the widow's mite (Luke 21:1-4):

Our team rehearses for their performances on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. each week in term time at St Laurence's. Obviously they are then able to go into the schools at assembly times during the day. Would you be interested in joining in this enterprise? If so, do contact Vivien Elphick on No prior acting skills necessary, and no need to learn lines! This is our rehearsal venue:

So what is OPEN THE BOOK?

OPEN THE BOOK offers a programme of themed and dramatised Bible stories at no charge to schools. Each session is around 10 minutes long and fits comfortably into assembly times.

Our team of volunteer storytellers uses drama, mime, props, and costume to present Bible stories in ways that are lively, engaging, informative ... and great fun for everyone involved!

OPEN THE BOOK began in Bedford in 1999, where a group of Christians first started presenting Bible stories in school assemblies. They were so well received that they were asked to return - again and again. Soon the word reached other schools and other areas, and OPEN THE BOOK began to grow from a local initiative into a much bigger national enterprise.

Since Open the Book became a national organisation in 2007 it has continued to grow at an encouraging rate.

OPEN THE BOOK is a favourite with everyone! Children, teachers, church leaders, parents... so many people have only good things to say about their experience of OPEN THE BOOK.

Here are some photos of us acting out the nativity in past years:
