Favourite Prayers

Be great to make a collection of favourite prayers that will speak to others (see Vivien's Rector's Ramblings). Here's a start:

A contribution from Edwina who says "Once a week this prayer was said at morning assembly at  the county primary school where I was a pupil. I liked it so much I learnt it  line by line over the weeks.  It is a prayer that has resonated with me ever since. "

Jesus,

Friend of the friendless,

Helper of the poor,

Healer of the sick,

Whose life was spent in doing good,

Let me follow in your footsteps,

Make me loving in all my words,

And in all my deeds;

Make me strong to do right,

Gentle with the weak,

And kind to all who are in sorrow:

That I may be like You,

My dear Lord and Master,  Amen

A Lenten feel to this prayer:

Lead me Saviour in thy Footsteps

Walk before me yet beside

Through the maze of daily living

Sure companion, constant guide.

In the turmoil of my failings

In the tangles of my sin

bring release and full forgiveness

let your life and goodness in

When I’m tempted and my instinct

Is to go the easy way

Stir my conscience by your Spirit

strengthen me to watch and pray

Test my real desires and motives

when I’m facing every choice

so restored and redirected

I will listen to your voice.

To give and not to count the cost (St Ignatius of Loyola)

Teach us, good Lord,
to serve you as you deserve,
to give and not to count the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek for rest,
to labour and not to ask for any reward,
save that of knowing that we do your will.  Amen.
